Background

In January 2000, the specialty of family medicine was dealing with concerns about:

  • The healthcare system:  organization, financing, quality, disparities
  • The role of family practice
  • Preparation of residency graduates
  • Student interest in family practice
  • Public understanding of family practice
  • Anticipating and preparing for the future

In response, the specialty convened an historic conference called Keystone III to "examine the soul of the discipline of family medicine."

Soon thereafter, the Future of Family Medicine project was conceived with the charge to "develop a strategy to transform and renew the specialty of family practice to meet the needs of people and society in a changing environment."
