Family Medicine Organizations Participating in the Future of Family Medicine Project

American Academy of Family Physicians
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) is the national professional association for family physicians. It is one of the largest national medical organizations, with more than 93,700 members in 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. The Academy was founded in 1947 to promote and maintain high quality standards for family doctors who are providing continuing comprehensive health care to the public. Family physicians are the only specialists qualified to treat most ailments and to provide comprehensive health care for people of all ages.

American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation
The American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (AAFPF) serves as the philanthropic arm of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Its primary goal is to enhance health care delivered to the American people by developing and providing philanthropic resources for the promotion and support of family medicine. These efforts are made possible through the generosity of family physicians, corporations and others who provide voluntary financial support for the AAFP Foundation.

American Board of Family Practice
The American Board of Family Practice (ABFP) is the second largest medical specialty board in the United States. Founded in 1969, it is a voluntary, not-for-profit, private organization. Through its certification and recertification processes, ABFP ensures that the family physicians it certifies have completed the necessary training and have the experience to provide quality care to the individual and the family, and that this commitment to excellence is maintained throughout the physicians' years of practice.

Association of Departments of Family Medicine
The Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM) promotes the philosophy and interests of family medicine in medical schools in the United States. The ADFM seeks to improve the efficient and effective administration and operation of academic departments, divisions and sections of family medicine for the benefit of society, faculty, students and institutions. In addition, ADFM supports research and scholarship in family medicine in United States medical schools.

Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors
The Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD) is dedicated to promoting excellence in family medicine graduate education in order to meet the health care needs of the American public. The AFMRD represents family medicine residency program directors at a national level and provides a political voice for them in appropriate arenas. It works to develop the art and science of resident education in family medicine, improve the quality of education of family physicians, promote ethical behavior in all aspects of residency operation, promote communication and cooperation between family medicine residency programs and other members of the family medicine family, provide a network for mutual assistance among family medicine residency directors, and enhance the administrative operation of family medicine residencies.

North American Primary Care Research Group
The North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) is a multidisciplinary organization for primary care researchers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and throughout the world, with a mission to develop, disseminate, and promote new knowledge regarding primary care. Founded in 1972 and oriented to family medicine, NAPCRG welcomes members from all primary care generalist disciplines and related fields, including epidemiology, behavioral sciences and health services research.

Society of Teachers of Family Medicine
The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) was founded in 1967 to respond to the needs of family medicine educators. From a small beginning of 105 founding members, it has grown to a membership of more than 5,000 teachers of family medicine. STFM is dedicated to improving the health of all people through education, research, patient care and advocacy. STFM works to provide academic development of faculty, advocate for social justice to improve health care for all people, improve the quality of care provided by family physicians through education and research, lead the process to define the most effective roles and responsibilities of family physicians in the evolving health care system, and explore and teach advances in information technology appropriate for family medicine.
